Temple Constituted in December 1959 to administer the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan in Britain, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission is responsible for the selection of candidates for the various categories of awards offered by the British Government, and for placing those selected at universities or other appropriate institutions in Britain. The Commission also nominates British graduates for awards offered under the Plan by overseas Commonwealth Governments. In its operations the Commission is assisted by the British Council, and its secretariat is provided by the Association of Commonwealth Universiies, from which further information may be obtained. Its duties are to provide for the permanent marking and care of the graves of the members of the forces of the Commonwealth who fell in the two World Wars, to build memorials bearing the names of those who have no known grave, and to maintain records, including, after the Second World War, a record of the civilian War Dead. It is in regular liaison with the Party's spokesmen and parliamentary committee, and with the overseas countries and their representatives here. Group activity in London and elsewhere leads up annually to a private spring conference on a current theme or themes. Its project was Coundon House which provides accommodation for 40 students. Waterlow, CMG The main functions of the Department are (i) teaching of nutrition to postgraduate students; (ii) experimental and epidemiological research in nutrition; (iii) to study and exchange information on nutrition particularly in developing countries; (iv) to provide assistance in field work and investigations. Detailed information on teaching activities is provided in the School Syllabus. These include a course for the degree of Master of Science in the University of London and teaching of nutrition in the courses for the Diploma in Tropical Public Health, the Diploma in Clinical Medicine of the Tropics and the Conjoint Board Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. The Department is part of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It co-operates with the Department of Health and Social Security nutritional investigations in the U.K. and also receives support from the Medical Research Council and from the Wellcome Trust. |
