The Council comprises representatives of each of the United Kingdom universities together with representatives of relevant U.K. organisations and institutions including polytechnics, and is in association with some 35 universities in Africa, the Caribbean, South East Asia, Hong Kong, The South Pacific, Malta and Mauritius. Brunt The Land Resources Division is one of the scientific units of the Ministry of Overseas Development, and its work forms part of the Ministry's aid programme in the field of renewable natural resources. The Division assesses land resources for the governments of developing countries and makes recommendations on the use of these resources for the development of agriculture, livestock husbandry and forestry; it also gives advice on related subjects to overseas governments and organisations, makes scientific personnel available for appointment abroad and provides lectures and training courses in the techniques of resources appraisal. It is governed by a Council of elected members. Its object: to promote friendly and educational intercourse between Commonwealth countries through the scheme for interchange of teachers. This scheme was instituted in 1919. Approximately 130 exchanges, each for a period of one educational year, are arranged yearly, involving some 260 teachers. The Scheme is run by the League on behalf of the British Government, who finance cost of living and travel grants for teachers proceeding from Britain, and subsidise the League's administration.
