IN MEMORIAM

CATHERINE CALDER

Late President of the Y. L. M. I. A. of Uintah Stake

(Sister Catherine Calder, who passed from this life in the early part of March of this year, was one of our most faithful and devoted stake pesidents. The General Board appreciated her sincerely for her dependableness, her ability as a leader, and for the sweet, kindly influence which she exercised among the girls with whom she labored and over whom she presided. She had endeared herself personally to all the members of the Board who knew her, and who had had the privilege of visiting her stake.Editors.)

Her Stake Board has submitted the following brief sketch of her life:

No woman in the Uintah Stake has been more widely known and entrusted with more responsibility than has Sister Catherine Calder, who for ten years has labored as president of the Y. L. M. I. A.

Her life was exceptionally active, being an example in temperance and in physical and intellectual strength. She was remarkably progressive, a woman of strong opinion, always courageous in upholding the right and in standing firmly against evil. Her testimony of the Gospel was staunch and true.

For more than thirty years she was a teacher in the Primary Grades and later, Primary Supervisor of public schools in Uintah County. Scores of adults and children are indebted to her for inspiration and for the cultivation of their talents.

Sister Calder with her husband, Orson B. Calder. shared the hardships of Pioneer life in the early settlement of Ashley valley. She faced trials bravely. She was the devoted mother of six children. Her husband, her eldest son, and only daughter have filled missions. Her son Alton made the supreme sacrifice in the late war.

She was a lover of beauty and was exemplary and modest in dress. One of our earliest recollections of her is that of her alto voice accompanied by her husband on the organ.

Sister Calder entirely forgot herself in her untiring efforts to push the door of opportunity a little wider open. She considered her calling an opportunity rather than an obligation and in that spirit she labored. Our esteemed president lived by word and deed her favorite poem

"We are not here to play, to dream, to drift,

We have work to do and loads to lift, Shun not the struggle-face it 'tis God's gift."

STAKE HAPPENINGS

We are delighted with reports which reach the general office from time to time of the special features being carried on in many of the stakes. There seems to be a more general desire than usual to "check up." A number of stakes have conducted tests and contests as closing exercises of the courses of study. Bear Lake and Twin Falls report successful contest in essay writing on phases of the subject, "An Everlasting Covenant;" special reviews of the lessons have been prepared by Intermediate classes in some of the stakes; Nebo has held a special test for Bee-Hive Girls; Utah recently sent in a new dialogue based on the Bee-Hive symbolism; Logan held an essay contest on Bee-Hive work. This stake also, in connection with Cache, held recently a conjoint conference. Two splendid meetings were held, hundreds of young people being in attendance besides many of the parents. Young Stake is particularly deserving of credit for having influenced its girls to read the scriptures. There are only 150 girls in the stake. On July 1st of last year, 115 of that number began reading the Book of Mormon; some read only a small portion, some one-third, some two-thirds, and 35 completed the book in the time specified, three months. On May 1st of this year, the same plan was commenced in regard to the Doctrine and Cevenants.

Stay With Your People

The Scriptures are replete with references to the scattering and gathering of Israel. For long years the chosen people were sifted all among nations but with the ushering in of the restored Gospel the bringing together began. Moses brought to the Moses brought to the Prophet Joseph the keys of gathering and since then people in all nations have heard the Gospel message and have felt the spirit of gath ering come upon them. As a result they have left native land, home, family and have come to Zion that they might better learn the way of life, and that they might walk more perfectly therein. Our Father, in His wisdom and mercy has brought this about that His children might escape the plagues of the world and receive the strength of being together.

There is a tendency for some of the children of the gathered Saints to cease to prize their birthright in Zion and the privileges that are theirs in the wards and stakes of the Church. They leave the dwelling places of the Saints and wander here and there because their incomes may be slightly or purchance very mater

portunities for wonderful service for the Primary officers and children.

For ten years rooms have been maintained in the Groves L. D. S. Hospital where many afflicted children have been cared for, who otherwise would have had to go without medical care. Through the offices of the General Board and the contributions of the children in the dif

ferent stakes these little ones have had at their disposal the services of the best surgeons, physicians, and nurses. As a result many boys and girls will go through life well and strong, equipped to wage the battle of life who else might have been invalids and dependents. Members of the board have visited these children at the hospital, looked after their welfare and have written their parents and kept them informed concerning their children's condition.

Now with this well equipped home greater service is to be rendered. While the children are convalesing they will be taught to do some useful work. The day nursery will be a boon to mothers who have to do work away from the home. They can leave their little children here, have them well fed and trained, as there will be a kindergarten conducted in connection with the day nursery. Another feature of this undertaking that is most praiseworthly is the opportunity it will give the well children to learn the beautiful lesson of service. They are going to raise funds to maintain this home. They are going to sew and send things to those who need. Who can estimate

the good of this sweet giving or sharing with others?

We are delighted that everything looks so auspicious for the success of the undertaking. Many will delight in giving for its needs. May every success attend it.

Use More Milk

have been gathered during the last Some very interesting statistics few years regarding the food value

of different articles in our diet. Milk is now placed by dieticians as our most valuable food. The surveys that have been made show that many of the children of the rich as well as of the poor are undernourished and that milk in large quantities is growing child. The state of Washnecessary for the well-being of the ington, realizing that school work is retarded because many children are not properly nourished has passed legislation so that free milk will be furnished to school children just as free text books are. All over the country campaigns are being conducted to get more milk used not for commercial reasons but looking to the well being of men, women, and children. The Y. L. M. I. A. ard the Primary have joined hands with other organizations in furthering the use of more milk. A slogan adopted for girls' organizations is: "Girls keep your health and beauty; drink a quart of milk a day."

We suggest that each class or swarm make a poster showing this slogan, to hang in its place of meeting.
