washed this way, say makers of "Onyx" Hosiery There are those deliciously ribbed silk stockings that fit so smoothly to the ankle. They are so trig and smart to wear with one's best frock. Then the clocked ones that everyone must have for the informal tailleur and the sturdier tweed mixtures for sports. No matter how sheer, these delicate silk stockings can be made to last. Wash them after every wearing in pure Lux suds.. They come out of their Lux bath fresh and new. Scalloped Potatoes This economical way of preparing potatoes removes them from the "side dish" class and makes of them a dish of distinction: 1 tbsp. salt, 4 medium sized potatoes, 1 1-3 cup water, 2-3 cup Carnation Milk, 2 tbsp. butter. Wash, pare and cut potatoes in thin slices. Put a layer in buttered baking dish, sprinkle with salt and dredge with a small amount of flour. Add milk and butter and bake until potatoes are soft. This recipe serves six people. The use of Carnation milk in this dish gives it a particular richness of flavor and this is true with regard to its use in any sort of baked dishes. The fact that Carnation is twice as rich as ordinary milk owing to half the water being removed by evaporation before it is sealed and sterilized, makes it not only economlcai to use in cooking but enables one to get a higher degree of richness. I have known many cooks who have found they could be much more certain of the success of their dishes when they used Carnation Milk because of its unvarying quality. XXXIII OCTOBER, 1922 No. 10 Over the Hills to Happiness By Ruth Martin Cherril, like an eager child, flattened her nose against the steamy glass as the train ground to a jerky stop in Paradise. Same dull brown houses, same sagging chicken coops, samo battered milk cans, same pig sty in Brown's back yard! Cherril shuddered and wrinkled a nose that already turned up ever so little. "Well, Carrots!" "Dad!" Cherril hugged the big man who lifted her easily to the platform, patted his rough cheeks and linked her arm in his. He held her chin in his big hand, shook her playfully and held her off to study her. "I'm darned! A reg'lar lady!" After he had cranked the Ford, climbed awkwardly over the door and slid with a groan behind the steering wheel Cherril began her battery of questions she wanted to know about everything and everybody, for a lot of things can happen in four years and letters from a busy person like her sister Agatha were so unsatisfactory! Micheal McPherson laughed and told her she might as well save them, as he didn't calculate to keep up with the gossip of a lively place like Paradise. He was solid, slow, stubborn-good humored, as Cherril knew, and generous when you pleased him, but when he was angry-! I He wore no coat, and his shirt near his suspenders was stained with perspiration. His hands on the wheel were big and powerful, and his keen eyes looked straight ahead. Cherril was different. Her eager face was white against her black sweater and sailor. Her hair gleamed gold and auburn in sleek puffs. She was smart, alive, definite-like a poster. But she was like her father in stubbornness, and in a quick and very dreadful temper. Cherril was conscious of a very deep gratitude that she would not have to stay in Paradise longer than three months-till school should start again when her father cleared his throat and spoke with the haste and decision that implied that he knew what he had to say would not please her but it might as well be settled |
