Stran 105 - The more we reflect upon all that occurs in the United States the more shall we be persuaded that the lawyers as a body form the most powerful, if not the only, counterpoise to the democratic element.
Stran 119 - If we are to continue a government of limited powers these agencies of regulation must themselves be regulated. The limits of their power over the citizen must be fixed and determined. The rights of the citizen against them must be made plain. A system of administrative law must be developed, and that with us is still in its infancy, crude and imperfect.
Stran 105 - When the American people is intoxicated by passion, or carried away by the impetuosity of its ideas, it is checked and stopped by the almost invisible influence of its legal counsellors...
Stran vii - And the said association is formed to cultivate the science of jurisprudence, to promote reform in the law, to facilitate the administration of justice, to elevate the standard of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession, and to cherish the spirit of brotherhood among the members thereof.
Stran xvi - All papers read before the Association shall be lodged with the Secretary. The Annual Address of the President, the Reports of Committees, and all proceedings at the Annual Meeting shall be printed; but no other address made or paper read or presented shall be printed, except by order of the Committee on Publications.
Stran x - Grievances shall receive all complaints which may be made in matters affecting the interests of the legal profession, the practice of law and the administration .of justice and report the same to the Association with such recommendations as they may deem advisable.
Stran 114 - I have always thought, from my earliest youth till now, that the greatest scourge an angry Heaven ever inflicted upon an ungrateful and a sinning people, was an ignorant, a corrupt, or a dependent Judiciary.
Stran x - The Committee on Legal Biography shall consist of so many members as the Association shall appoint from year to year. It shall be its duty to provide for the preservation among the archives of the Association of suitable written or printed memorials of the lives and characters of distinguished deceased members of the Bar of the State.
Stran 115 - If it will do its duty to itself, if it will do its duty to the profession which it follows and to which it is devoted, the Bar can do everything else. It can have reformed constitutions, it can have a reformed Judiciary, it can have the administration of justice made pure and honorable, and can restore both the Judiciary and the Bar, until it shall be once more, as it formerly was, an honorable and elevated calling.
Stran x - The proceedings of this Committee shall be deemed confidential and shall be kept secret, except so far as written or printed reports of the same shall be necessarily and officially made to the Association.
