In addition to languages that are native to the region where they are spoken--Basque, Welsh, Frisian, Swedish in Finland, and others--immigrant languages in Europe are also considered, mostly by country, but also some specific languages with as Maghrebine Arabic in France, and Romani everywhere. Then as comparison, seven additional essays look at minority languages in several English speaking countries outside of Europe, at Turkey, and at Berber and Arabic in Morocco. Guus Extra is director of Babylon, Center for Studies of Multilingualism in the Multicultural Society at Tilburg University (the Netherlands) and professor of language and minorities at the same university. Durk Gorter is Ikerbasque research professor in the Department of Education Sciences at the University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU, Spain. He conducts research on multilingual education, European minority languages and linguistic landscapes; topics on which he has published widely.
