LOCATION.

The Medical Department occupies one of the University buildings located south of Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, on the site donated by the late Hon. Adolph Sutro.

The building contains quarters for equipment with the best modern apparatus upon the principle of individual student work.

On the basement floor are the Anatomical Preparation-room, Students' Locker Room, Janitors' and Storage Rooms, and Lavatories. On the first floor are the offices of administration, the Library, laboratories for Physiology and Chemical Pathology, the Hearst Laboratory for original research in Pathology, an auxiliary laboratory for research, and a Students' Room.

The second story contains the laboratories for Histology, Chemical Physiology, General Pathology, Bacteriology, and a large General Lecture room.

The third floor contains dissecting rooms, research laboratories, and preparation rooms for anatomy. The dissecting rooms are purposely built small, in order to avoid the noise and disturbance, that inevitably ensue when a number of students work in a large room. These rooms have been finished with great care in order to gain the effect of a pleasant environment in the work of the student. The anatomical material is embalmed and injected by a constant-pressure apparatus, and is preserved in wood alcohol vapor.

The topographical advantages found in the location of the buildings are great. Facing as they do the north, on an elevation to give an unobstructed view over a large part of the peninsula on which San Francisco is situated, with Golden Gate Park in the immediate foreground, an expansive view of the harbor, the Golden Gate and the Pacific Ocean, and the mountains and hills of Marin, Contra Costa

and Alameda Counties, they receive the full benefit of the neighboring trade-winds that blow directly from the ocean, coupled with the advantage of perfect drainage.
