Paas

AAS. See PASSE. PAAW (PETER), or in Latin Pavius, a physician and anatomist, born at Amsterdam in 1564, was educated in medical studies at Leyden, whence he proceeded to Paris for farther improvement. He afterwards spent some time in Denmark, and at Rostock, where he received the degree of doctor in 1587, and at Padua. On his return to Leyden, he was appointed professor of medicine in 1589, in which office he acquired the approbation and esteem both of the public and his colleagues, and died universally regretted, in August 1617, at the age of fifty-four. Anatomy and botany were the departments which he most ardently cul: tivated; and he was the founder of the botanic garden of Leyden. His works are, 1.“ Tractatus de Exercitiis, Lacticiniis, et Bellariis.” Rost. 2. “ Notæ in Galenum, de cibis boni et mali succi,” ibid. These two pieces appear to have been his inaugural exercises. 3. “ Hortus publicus Academiæ Lugduno-Batavæ, ejus Ichnographia, descriptio, usus, &c.” Lugd. Bat. 1601. 4. “ Primitiæ Anatomicæ de humani corporis Ossibus," ibid. 1615. 5. “ Succenturiatus Anatomicus, continens Commentaria in Hippocratem de Capitis Vulneribus. . Additæ sunt Annotationes in aliquot Capita Libri octavi C. Celsi," ibid, 1616. 6, “ Notæ et Commentarii in Epitomen Anatomicum Andreæ Vesalii, ibid. 1616. To these, we may add some works which appeared after his death. 7. “ De Valvula Intestini Epistolæ duæ.” Oppenheim, 1619, together with the first century of the Epistles of Fabricius Hildanus. 8. “ De Peste Tractatus, cum Henrici Florentii additamentis.” Lug. Bat. 1636. 9. “Anatomicæ Observationes selectiores." VOL. XXIV.
