PREFACE.

THE Sixth Volume of this Collection is now offered to the Public. The termination of hoftilities upon the Continent, the conclufion of peace between the Emperor and the French Republic, the republicanifing of Italy, and the negotiation at Lifle, render the present at least equal in interest and importance to any of the preceding Volumes. All the official documents. relative to thofe events will be found in this Volume, together with fome very important, and hitherto unpublished papers, refpecting the United States of America. The Editor muft exprefs his hope, that the fame affiduity and care will be recognised in this, as have been acknowledged in the former parts of this Collection.

TREATIES.

Treaty between his Britannic Majefty and the Landgrave of Heffe Darmstadt. Signed at Franckfort, the 10th Day of June, 1796.

E it known to thofe whom it may concern, that his Majesty the

of Heffe Darmstadt, in confideration of the ftri&t ties which unite their interests; and having judged that, in the present fituation of affairs, it would contribute to the reciprocal welfare of Great Bri tain, and of the dominions of Heffe Darmstadt, to cement and ftrengthen, by a new treaty of alliance, the connexion which fub fifts between them; his Britannic Majesty, in order to regulate the object relative to this treaty, has thought proper to nominate Charles Craufurd, his envoy at the Imperial and royal armies; and his Serene Highnefs has nominated, on his part, for the fame purpose, the Baron Charles of Barckhaus, his privy counsellor and director of the council of war; who, being furnished with the neceffary full powers, have agreed to take for bafis of the prefent treaty, the one formerly concluded between Great Britain and Helle, the 5th of October, 1793, to adopt fuch parts of it as may be applicable to the prefent circumftances, or to fettle, by new articles, thofe points which it may be neceifary to regulate otherwife and as it is not poffible to fpecify each particular cafe, every thing which fhall not appear to be determined in a precife manner, either in the prefent treaty or in the former treaty, thall be fettled with equity and faith, in conformity to the fame principles which have been adopted in former instances.

Article I. There thall be, therefore, in virtue of this treaty, between his Majefty the King of Great Britain and his Serene Highnefs the Landgrave of Heffe Darmstadt, their heirs and fuc ceffors, a strict friendship, and a fincere, firm, and conftant uni n, fo that the one thall confider the interefts of the other as his own, and thall strive to promote them with good faith as much as pof ible, and to prevent and remove all disturbance and injury.
