PREFACE.

As great numbers of the descendants of Revolutionary officers and soldiers are, at this time, eagerly in search ot information relative to the service of their ancestors, for purposes of profit and satisfaction as well as of history; and, as many of them reside at places where nothing ot the kind can be had without considerable difficulty and expense, I have thought it my proper duty to place my collections within the reach of all interested.

In so doing, I am not without a strong reason to induce a belief that they will be of some considerable historical interest in indicating the different locations and movements of the army, and in showing the whereabouts of individual officers, regiments, detachments, and corps, as well as in giving the precise dates of important events; and as the financial difficulties of the infant Republic in 1780 has been a subject of great interest, both in history and in legislation, new light is thrown upon it by the correspondence dated in that year.
