This is an impeccably researched, gripping book. I read this on the recommendation of a friend, and at this was not aware what aspect of the year it would center on, given how momentous a year it was in our country's history.
The book centers around the military campaigns of 1776 - in fact, the Declaration itself is only mentioned briefly - and primarily on the character of George Washington. It's so well populated with fact (consider that the bibliography is a good third of the book) and direct quotations of those involved in each engagement that I felt immersed in the action at any given point. I've never felt so engaged in a historical subject.
This has renewed my interest in the Revolution - I cannot wait to read additional books on the period, and many more by this talented author.
