David McCullough achieves here what is nearly impossible with historical non-fiction: He has created a nail-biting page turner. You know the ending, and yet, he manages to provide a narrative that is captivating and exciting. McCullough incorporates all of the necessary minutiae in a way that propels the narrative rather than weighs it down. The early days of the revolution were dark, and American victory seemed unlikely. This historical narrative offers a wonderful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who had nothing more to go on than their firm belief in the leaders who told them that individual liberty was a God-given right, and to fight for this right was to participate in a glorious cause. I know I take for granted the liberties I enjoy because of those who fought this revolution, and this book is a timely reminder of why we must continue to uphold the values that were the foundation for the Glorious Cause.
