I really enjoyed McCullough's writing, especially the way he used letters and notes passed from both sides of the war to other fellow members as well as their families. For me, it became much more realistic and personal as one could understand a glimpse, albeit small, of what the leaders were going through during that time.

One thought remained constant throughout reading and that was just how impressed I was with George Washington's bravery and leadership. While at the beginning of his command some may have faulted him for being indecisive, I fear that if anyone else were leading, the United States might still be a territory under British tyranny. Paraphrasing McCullough, if it were during the age of paganism, the American people would have worshiped him as a god.

Anyway, the book's scope focuses on the year 1776 (titles are so deceiving these days) and of course the beginning the of the American Revolution. I was quite fascinated not only by the turmoil each side faced, but also the hope and resiliency displayed throughout the war. If you're a fan of history or you know, America, reading this would be a few hours well spent.
