it was amazing

"No people on earth in whom a spirit of enthusiastic zeal is so readily kindled, and burns so remarkably, as Americans." Mercy Warren

This book is an incredibly vivid accounting of the year 1776 and the birth of a nation. It starts with the siege of Boston in 1775 and ends with the Battle at Princeton in January 1777. It shows the hard struggles and triumphs of Washington and the Continental Army. I loved this book so much. David McCullough uses the journals and letters written by the soldiers from both sides of the war to tell the story. It's absolutely incredible. I think it's a book everyone should have to read because it shows how a small group of people fighting for a "glorious cause" can change history.

I don't think people today understand the sacrifices these patriots made out of love for their country. It staggers the mind to see how ill-equipped and inexperienced the army was, but they triumphed over the greatest military force in the world because they never quit. Another thing that blew me away is the age of the majority of the people fighting. The revolutionaries were so young! Many of the generals were only in their 20s or 30s, and Washington was only in his 40s! I think it's amazing that people so young could overcome and accomplish so much!

The Revolutionary War was a long, difficult war, and this book obviously only covers one year of it. However, it provides an incredibly detailed account of it. I also love how this book spends a lot of time talking about Knox and Greene. Now I want to go out and find books about them to read.

Basically, everyone should read this book, because it's really great. It makes you love America even more.
