I finally finished reading 1776! It has given me a much greater appreciation for just how precarious the position of the American cause was at the beginning of the war. We celebrate July 4, 1776 as the beginning of our independence, but really the outcome was far from assured, and frequently looked hopeless. This is a very dense book and took me awhile to get through (and I read histories!) but is well worth the effort. McCulough gives detailed background information on all the major players, so you feel you get to know the actual people behind the events of 1776. He also quotes extensively from primary sources such as letters and journals, so you really get to know what people were actually thinking and feeling. This is an extremely well-researched and worthwhile book.
