David McCullough describes American history with more vivid depictions than an American flag lit up by neon colors. He turns this important year into the white-knuckle drama that it really must have been, including George Washington's gallant leadership, the close encounters with the British and loyalists that could easily have changed the outcome of the war, and the Battle of Trenton. His page-turning portrayal brings history alive, and -- thank goodness -- is therefore a giant upgrade from the snooze-worthy history textbooks of high school. There is absolutely no reason history should be boring; after all, reality is always stranger than fiction. "1776" was no different! Beautifully done.
