Read, and re-read. McCullough adroitly, seamlessly weaves his sources into his writing, and "1776" is no exception--nor does his reputation rely on the opinions of amateur historians like yours truly. As the title indicates, the book focuses on the first, precarious year of American independence. I think this book (like the others he has written) has captured a place among the "must-reads" of American history because, rather than get bogged down with outright debates of historiography, McCullough simply asserts his claims and backs them up with beautifully-selected sources. This caliber of historical writing can be appreciated by all, but maybe appreciated in a special way by any who have endeavored to responsibly write historical non-fiction.
