I read this book with the intention to get a general overview of the war for independence. Though I didn't as a wide of an overview as I had assumed, I still greatly enjoyed this book.
It was a fantastic narrative! The story was written in an almost fictitious way, yet it was better, because you knew it was real.
It did a very good job in describing the generals and soldiers. It wasn't a one sided story. It had quotes from both the British and Americans. Yet it was organized, flowing in such a way that it didn't completely overload you with information.
Many people have written books specifically on George Washington, but this probably tops all. It portrayed what noble and honorable man he was, but still showed that he was a man, therefore had struggles (indecisiveness being one). He wasn't described as a superficial being, but a very wise and noble man.
In describing a certain persons feelings, the author didn't try filling in with his own thoughts, but used the entries from that individual's diary.
About half way through, I got so worried who would win in the end (though I already knew), it just seemed like such a hopeless war. The odds were truly against the patriots.
Yet in all this, we can saw God's grace and provision, His will. I'm not trying to use this as evidence that America is the new Israel, but that God can use seemingly impossible circumstances flip over according to His will.
All in all, I enjoyed this book and would highly recomend it as a good historical and well written book!
