In spite of having a history degree, this is the first book I've ever read on the American Revolution, and it surprised me. I think the average American's understanding of 1776 is rather sugar-coated. Mine certainly was. The revolution was a nasty, bloody proposition, and it almost did not succeed. The British far exceeded the Revolutionary Army in both soldiers, training, experience and resources. George Washington had scant military training and experience, and he was full of justified self doubt. When he was giving the job of leading the army he told the congress that he felt he was wildly unqualified.
But Washington and the Americans pulled it off in the end, of course.
MuCullough does it again too.
