This book gives great insight into the character of George Washington and really brings to life the turbulent year of 1776. It was actually a bit discouraging reading about the Americans suffering one crushing defeat after the other. After reading this it seems nothing short of a miracle that America was able to actually win the war against the strongest nation on the earth at the time. The British were far better trained, better equipped, better clothed, and had an unrivaled navy. On the other hand, the Americans were literally fighting with pitchforks and their navy was essentially nonexistent. I liked that the author pointed out the miracles along the way and ended with the climax of Washington crossing the Delaware.
