it was amazing
bookshelves: history

The familiar story of the year 1776 in American history is that of the Declaration of Independence – Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Caesar Rodney’s ride, John Hancock’s signature. This book takes us out of Philadelphia and straight to the center of battle with George Washington, Nathaniel Greene, Israel Putnam, and the unorganized, ragtag men who formed the Continental Army. We’re never taught in school just how grim were America’s chances, how likely that the men we regard as heroes today would be hanged as traitors. And that story of Washington crossing the Delaware? It may not have been a great battle won, but in terms of morale-boosting, it may well have been the turning point of the entire war. I listened to an audiobook read by the author.
