Not enough shenanigans in this one. Seriously lacking in colorful anecdotes for me to beguile and annoy friends and total strangers with, which is absolutely the point of reading a book like this. The stuff from the diaries and letters home from average soldiers in the Continental Army were interesting and I'd read a whole book about it (and I'm sure one exists) but then we'd get to pages detailing the fortification of Manhattan and my eyes glazed over in boredom. This book was mostly boring military stuff and that's a matter of me misunderstanding what the book was about. I thought it was going to be about the military AND political history of 1776. Also the personalities that form the backbone of the narrative weren't that interesting. George Washington is just a really boring dude, honestly. Finished it so quickly because I've spent a lot of time in airports recently.
