McCullough has officially become my favorite writer of history. Here he tells the story of Washington’s campaigns against the British during the fateful year of 1776. That Washington was willing to risk the wealth and comfort of his home life in order to lead the clunky, undisciplined, and rapidly shrinking American army in a seemingly futile war against the British says so much about the man’s character, the commitment he felt to the cause of independence, and the general spirit of tenacity and idealism that drove the founders of this country.
