** spoiler alert **
I found this book to be informative, well-written (of course!), and full of surprising facts. The big message I got from it was that the war was a lot longer, and a lot closer, than today's conventional knowledge would have you think. The book is chock-full of incidents during which if the weather had been different, for example, we'd probably have the queen's visage on our currency today.
McCullough did a great job of providing just enough contextual information to keep you informed, while not going off into tangents that cause you to lose the thread of the story. That said, I found the ending of the book to be a bit sudden, and it left me wanting more. Hopefully he plans a follow-up to this.
