I suppose I am giving this 3 stars because it was not what I was expecting. It is really just about 1776, and a bit of 1775 and 1777. I suppose that should be expected by the title, but I was hoping for a book about the entire revolutionary war.

I was really surprised about how much I did not know about the war. I completely forgot that it started in Boston. I had no idea how bad the Continental Army was, or the horrible defeats it took in New York City (Brooklyn, Ft. Washington). I didn't know Britain conscripted Hessians for there army. I did learn that Nathaneal Greene was an important general, as was Henry Knox. George Washington also comes across well in the book. :)

The book almost seemed to be a collection of letters from that time period, which is probably a fairly good way to write down history. He does a great job of presenting the mood of the colonists and the hard conditions of Washington and his army.
