This book was not at all what I was expecting. I thought I would read more about the signing of the Declaration of Independence but instead this book focused on the battles that were fought and Washington's role in them. The Declaration of Independence was pretty much just mentioned in passing. The title itself is a little misleading since the book continues to follow Washington into 1777. The books finishes basically after the successful battle at Trenton and then the author briefly mentions that the war went on for another 6 years, making the ending a little anticlimactic. The book should really be titled "The Battles of George Washington 1776-1777". Even though it was interesting it read more like a school textbook than anything else. David McCullough may have done extensive research and included a lot of little known details but he could really learn how to make historical non-fiction less dry and textbook-y from Nathaniel Philbrick and Lee Miller.
