1776 was an engaging introduction to the struggle for American independence in its crucial birth year. Despite its abrupt opening and questionable sentence structures, I appreciated the book for how much it taught me. McCullough narrates a history more than he argues a thesis; actually, many of his cited accounts seemed irrelevant or selective, and his discussion could have involved the political and social context of the period. For the pace McCullough achieves in his chronology, however, 1776 remains an informative, accessible read.
