I could not help comparing this historical offering to two of my favorite historical authors, Michael and Jeff Shaara. While 1776 is detailed and uses historical quotes, it suffers by comparison to the Shaaras who fictionalize dialogue to create compelling and personal profiles of the participants. The result here is dry and a little flat with emphasis on the "tooing and froing" without the personalities helping the story line. I didn't "like" either George Washington or the British officers in this offering. Now I do realize that I was reading straight history here and as that goes it was really well done. That is the best I can say.
