Contrary to the picture painted in public schools while I was growing up, us winning the revolution was such a close thing that almost seems impossible given the terrible situations General Washington found himself and his troops in throughout the revolutions landmark year. Dysentery, disease and desertion nearly spelled the end of it and most of the year found our troops continually losing every skirmish and giving up every inch of ground while trying to maintain their spirit. The books greatly humanizes Washington, peels away his mythic vestige and portrays him as a man deeply humbled and burdened by the tremendous responsibility placed on his shoulders.

The last 20-30% really does suck you in and convey some great patriotic feelings, but it took a very large amount of time to get there. Overall it's enjoyable, but a bit too slow for me.
