A very good book that gives new light to the pivotal year 1776. George Washington was not the greatest military man of the time. He was not a great speech maker or even as well liked and respected as he is now, but he was the right man at the right time. 1776 by David McCullough is an interesting review of what Washington and the Continental Army had to endure in the year that July 4th became more than just another date in history.

McCullough paints a picture of a time when American independence was pretty much on the verge of being nothing more than a dream. When the members of the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence pledging their lives, fortunes and sacred honors there was no guarantee that they would succeed. Great Britain was the mightiest military of all and this ragtag band of rebels had no chance. The year 1776 was one of defeats and retreats from New York all the way to the outskirts of Philadelphia. What started out as a year of mistakes and defeats for Washington ended in a victory that nobody but Washington himself believed possible.

You will see Washington as the greatest American that he is. I hearty recommendation for this book as McCullough again takes a story and makes it one that you can't stop reading and learning about.
