In his novel, "1776" David McCullough follows George Washington and his ragtag militia during the year of our nation's birth and the infancy of the Revolutionary War. Although the book focuses on Washington, McCullough highlights numerous players in the independence game from both sides of the Atlantic, American and British officers alike, as well as many civilians who had minor but crucial roles in the early war. Although the Americans suffered many defeats and looked to be fighting a losing fight, they punctuated the year with the crossing of the Delaware, one of Washington's greatest achievements and a pivotal moment in the early war. The depth at which McCullough examines the Colonies and the sentiment on the war at the time is impressive and has come to be expected from the historical juggernaut that he has become. Any fan of American history should definitely pick up this account of the once budding nation's most important year.
